West Hartford is a town that is found in Hartford County which is in Connecticut. West Hartford sits on approximately 22.3 square miles piece of land. 0.42 square miles is occupied by water. The highest point on West Hartford is found on the Talcott Mountain. This spot is 778 feet above the sea level. The town borders places like New Britain, Avon and Bloomfield.  

​The history of West Hartford goes back to 1636 when the area provided the Wampanoag people refuge from winter.  Reverend Thomas Hooker got some people who were willing to leave Cambridge in 1636 to travel with him to the ‘Great River’. This is where they settled and created the Hartford Colony. The number of people at Hartford multiplied and this created a need for more land. In 1672, a decision was made by the proprietors of the place to divide the area towards the West. A northern boundary was created at Bloomfield and the Southern boundary at the place presently known as New Britain Avenue. In 1830, Farmington was made part of the western boundary. The people called the area the west Division of Hartford and the name stuck. The Connecticut General Assembly began calling it the Society of West Hartford in 1806 and that is how its name changed. 

West Hartford’s population is 63, 268. White people make up 79% of this population, the Latino take up 9%, the Asians 7%, blacks are 6% and 3% are from other races. This region has more females than males. The females are 33, 903 while the males are 29, 365. The median age of the residents of West Hartford is 41. The average household in West Hartford accommodates two people. 
The Elizabeth Park which I’m sure you’ve heard of over the years is located in West Hartford. The garden is a sight to behold especially in June when it is in full bloom. March and April are also excellent periods to visit the park because that is the time that tulips and daffodils blossom. The Westmoor Park has a demonstration farm where people go to get environmental education.

​West Hartford offers a mix of an urban and a suburban feel. The area has an atmosphere to it that says you do not need to hurry. You can actually feel like parking your car so you can talk a walk to enjoy the sidewalks and the numerous shops in the vicinity. One establishment that stands out in the area is the Blue Back square. This square has cinemas such as the Cinepolis Cinemas, boutique shops like the Delamar West Hartford boutique, and it holds concerts too. Both residents and visitors like to go to Petersen Farms to enjoy its delicious ice cream. The playhouse located on Park Avenue has performances all through the year and people of all ages go there to enjoy the various performances. 

If you like shopping then you should walk along Park Road. Here, you will access everything from clothing stores, to jewelry stores to dining places and even notice some ethnic markets. Park Avenue has undergone a transformation over the years and it is now referred to as the New Park Avenue. This place currently accommodates large businesses such as national stores. The Veterans Memorial Ice Skating Rink is for those who wish to engage in skating. There are four outdoor swimming pools that allow people to swim for fun. They also provide swimming lessons for those who are interested in learning how to swim. These swimming pools are located at the various parks in West Hartford and these are Eisenhower, Fernridge, Beachland, and Kennedy Park. 


The residents of West Hartford have various transportation options. 2.4% of the people who work in West Hartford, Connecticut use public transportation. 7.3 % of the residents prefer to carpool. 1.9% get to work on foot while 4.5% work from home. The area has a one way commute and it takes someone around 22 minutes to get from home to work or from work back to their home. One of the popular means of getting around is the ‘Dial- A-Ride service. West Hartford, Connecticut has senior residents who find difficulties using public transportation or suffer from some kind of disability that prevent them from using public transportation. These are usually people who are 65 years old and above. These residents sign up for Dial- A-Ride and then enjoy its services. Dial- A-Ride gives priority to individuals with medical appointments followed by those who want to do their grocery shopping, and the ones who want to visit the senior centers in the area. 

West Hartford, Connecticut has several historic buildings. The University of Saint Joseph is one such building. This learning institution belongs to the Roman Catholic. It was established in 1932 with the purpose of educating women. Elmwood Community Church was established in 1928. The Elmwood Chapel was set up in 1876 to enable people from the community to engage in worship. Sunday afternoons were reserved for classes and the evenings were meant for services. The Burgoyne Elms located in Elmwood has a sign on it explaining how the residents celebrated in the 18thcentury when the British army led by General Burgoyne was captured at Saratoga. Although this happened in 1777, the residents of West Hartford decided to plant elm saplings in the following century as a sign of celebration. The people are still reminded of how vital that event was.
