West Hartford is a town that is found in Hartford County which is in Connecticut. West Hartford sits on approximately 22.3 square miles piece of land. 0.42 square miles is occupied by water. The history of West Hartford goes back to 1636 when the area provided the Wampanoag people refuge from winter. Reverend Thomas Hooker got some people who were willing to leave Cambridge in 1636 to travel with him to the ‘Great River’. This is where they settled and created the Hartford Colony. The number of people at Hartford multiplied and this created a need for more land. In 1672, a decision was made by the proprietors of the place to divide the area towards the West. A northern boundary was created at Bloomfield and the Southern boundary at the place presently known as New Britain Avenue. In 1830, Farmington was made part of the western boundary. The people called the area the west Division of Hartford and the name stuck. The Connecticut General Assembly began calling it the Society of West Hartford in 1806 and that is how its name changed.
